Unwilling U-U bonding in U2@C80: cage-driven metal-metal bonds in di-uranium fullerenes.

چکیده
Endohedral actinide fullerenes are rare and a little is known about their molecular properties. Here we characterize the U2@C80 system, which was recently detected experimentally by means of mass spectrometry (Akiyama et al., JACS, 2001, 123, 181). Theoretical calculations predict a stable endohedral system, (7)U2@C80, derived from the C80:7 IPR fullerene cage, with six unpaired electrons. Bonding analysis reveals a double ferromagnetic (one-electron-two-center) U-U bond at an rU-U distance of 3.9 Å. This bonding is realized mainly via U(5f) orbitals. The U-U interaction inside the cage is estimated to be about -18 kcal mol(-1). U-U bonding is further studied along the U2@Cn (n = 60, 70, 80, 84, 90) series and the U-U bonds are also identified in U2@C70 and U2@C84 systems at rU-U∼ 4 Å. It is found that the character of U-U bonding depends on the U-U distance, which is dictated by the cage type. A concept of unwilling metal-metal bonding is suggested: uranium atoms are strongly bound to the cage and carry a positive charge. Pushing the U(5f) electron density into the U-U bonding region reduces electrostatic repulsion between enclosed atoms, thus forcing U-U bonds.

Explanation of the different preferential binding sites for Ce and La in M 2 @ C 80 ( M 1⁄4 Ce , La ) — a density functional theory prediction
Metallofullerenes have many possible uses in technology and even in bio-medical applications. Some fullerenes have been found to have two incarcerated metal atoms such as M2@C80 (M 1⁄4 La, Ce, etc.). We have calculated the structural and electronic properties of Ce2@C80 using density functional theory (DFT). Ce is known to be preferentially incorporated into the Ih symmetric C80 isomer as La do...

Heterobimetallic complexes containing short uranium-group 10 metal bonds have been prepared from monometallic IU(IV)(OAr(P)-κ(2)O,P)3 (2) {[Ar(P)O](-) = 2-tert-butyl-4-methyl-6-(diphenylphosphino)phenolate}. The U-M bond in IU(IV)(μ-OAr(P)-1κ(1)O,2κ(1)P)3M(0), M = Ni (3-Ni), Pd (3-Pd), and Pt (3-Pt), has been investigated by experimental and DFT computational methods. Comparisons of 3-Ni with t...

Lanthanide-lanthanide bonds are exceptionally rare, and dimetallofullerenes provide a unique possibility to stabilize and study these unusual bonding patterns. The presence of metal-metal bonds and consequences thereof for the electronic properties of M2@C82 (M = Sc, Er, Lu) are addressed by electrochemistry, electron paramagnetic resonance, SQUID magnetometry and other spectroscopic techniques...

Use of sterically hindered ligands to maintain the integrity of normally unstable chemical entities is a widespread technique in modern synthetic chemistry. Bulky aryl and alkyl substituents have been designed to stabilize sensitive compounds, such as main-group-element dimers with multiple bonds, including the alkyne analogues of heavier Group 14 elements. 3] This methodology was recently empl...
متن کاملDo QTAIM metrics correlate with the strength of heavy element-ligand bonds?
The bonding in monomeric and dimeric molecular compounds of Cr, Mo, W and U is explored using the Quantum Theory of Atoms-in-Molecules (QTAIM). The metal-ligand and metal-metal bond critical point properties ρb, ∇(2)ρb and Hb, and also the bond delocalisation indices δ(A, B), are correlated with the data from previous Ziegler-Rauk energy decomposition studies of the same systems. For M2X6 (M = ...
